NAME: Richard Gansey III (Gansey)
CANON: The Raven Cycle
CANON POINT: After The Dream Thieves and before Blue Lily, Lily Blue.
AGE: 18
BACKGROUND: Gansey's Wiki Entry
PERSONALITY:
Gansey is person who has three variations: the politician’s son, the scholarly teenage, and Gansey on Fire.
The Politician’s Son
This is the version of Gansey that most of the world gets to see. He is from a line of leaders and politicians, wealthy and sure of his status in the world. This variation of Gansey is popular with both his peers and the adults at the school. There’s always a charming smile hidden away, ready to be shown to the world to camouflage his emotions, especially those that aren't appropriate for the public to see. Fear, doubt, sadness, are carefully hidden away, covered by a smile that will make others feel better. His friends rarely get to see these emotions even when Gansey is at his breaking point.
This version of Gansey uses his family connections and money to protect his friends, bribing the school administration to keep his friend, Ronan, in school, is friendly with his professors as if he is a colleague instead of a student, and knows how to navigate his mother's political events with ease. He seems to be the stereotype of the rich, influential teenage boy. This is the version of Gansey that he hates and the world that he tries to avoid as much as possible despite fitting into it easily.
The Scholarly Teenager
Gansey is a brilliant scholar. He is methodical in his search for the lost king, Glendower, even though it may seems haphazard to outsiders. He obsesses over details of his search, finding patterns in energy readings, history, and myth to try to discover any clue that might help his quest. When he focuses on something, it takes up the majority of his attention until something more important causes him to shift is focus to another subject.
Because of his family background, he seems like he should want the finer things in life, but instead he has very little interest in the trappings of wealth. Gansey lives in an abandoned factory with only the most basic amenities. He feels uncomfortable in his family’s mansion, fitting into that environment out of necessity, but never feeling at home there. He thinks his father’s collection of expensive, European sports cars as ‘soulless’, preferring his Camaro instead.
On many occasions, Gansey thinks that he wants to be like his orange 1973 Camaro. The car is beautiful on the outside, but it is quirky. It is extremely bright, unapologetically loud, and a throwback to an era that no longer exists. Which, in many ways, is how Gansey is. He wears bright shirts that his friends hate because they help lift his moods and are his attempt at working through his darker moments. Whenever he walks onto a public place, almost everyone looks at him. People listen when he speaks, even when he isn’t using his magical abilities. He’s serious and thoughtful, which leads him to be described as an ‘old man’ in a teenage body.
Despite the image that he presents to the world, Gansey has low self-worth. Whether this is because he’s trying to prepare himself for his fated death or if this is something he felt before learning he’d die before graduating from high school is unclear. He regularly thinks that his friends would be fine without him, that he’s unneeded by them. He doesn’t see himself as important to them, not realizing that each person in the group loves him and they all wish to support and protect him.
Gansey is the peacekeeper and protector of the group. He’s the one soothes Ronan’s bad temper and smooths over any consequences for Ronan’s bad life choices, going against his morals to keep Ronan safe. When his friend Adam’s temper gets the better of him, Gansey is the one who usually steps back, letting Adam work through his mood and taking the brunt of his anger.
At times, Gansey can be reckless and selfish. Despite knowing that he is deathly allergic to stinging insects, he rarely carries his epi pen or worries about being stung. He left home around the age of 13 to try to find Glendower without adult supervision and his family rarely knew where he was. He didn’t bother contacting them and rarely updates them on his whereabouts even when he’s back in the United States. During his trips abroad, he regularly left his friends without saying goodbye. He describes himself as a coward and selfish in that respect. He can’t deal with goodbyes so he left without any hint of what he was leaving so that he didn’t have to deal with those emotions.
Despite growing up in a political family, Gansey is an idealist. He thinks the best of others and the world, attempting not to judge others. Over and over, he’s exposed to the darker aspects of humanity, and later, of magic, and he still believes in the goodness of people and is awed by the magic that he keeps discovering.
Gansey on Fire
There is also a version of Gansey that Ronan calls ‘Gansey on Fire’. This version is rarely seen in the books, but he’s described as the version who bought the Camaro, tore apart the factory to rebuild it into a home, and had wilder impulses than those of the Gansey that the four books usually describe. This version of Gansey is the one who becomes furious when someone breaks into his home and destroys the things he loves. He’s the king demanding retribution for that invasion. He is the one that does foolish, reckless things, realizing the consequences afterward. He stands up for his ideals and will eventually sacrifice his life to protect the people he loves most.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Finding Lost Things
Gansey has a gift for finding things that is briefly discussed in the books. This is mostly described in the context of finding historical artifacts. He states that he has a 'gift' for finding things and a responsibility to use it. The full extent of this is never discussed.
The Voice of a King
Gansey has the 'voice of a king'. It is a power that like his ability to find things, isn't fully explained. In one situation when he was able to awaken a cavern full of skeletons when he had his friends Adam, Ronan, and Blue to help amplify and focus his power. He's able to command or request the magical forest, Cabeswater, to alter aspects of itself to fit his whims. Once he thought of the fish in a stream as being one color, then thought of another color, and the fish changed to the color he preferred. He also turned falling leaves into illusions of fish that 'swam' around his friends to entertain them. To use the commands to perform larger magics, he needs a power source that he can tap into, which at his canon point, he still struggles with. Usually he needs his friends to help him do these types of spells.
Gansey is described as being incredibly charming, which usually is assumed to be because he is part of a family that has been rooted in politics for centuries. This may also be an unknown side effect of the 'voice of a king'. It may improve his persuasiveness, but if it does, Gansey doesn't realize that he has this ability.
In game, the “voice of a king” would be nerfed to the potential to charm others, but I would like for him to be able to focus or guide magic to some extent, if that could be possible.
Other Powers and Abilities
He has the ability to see ghosts and other paranormal phenomenon.
Despite his age, Gansey is a very thorough scholar. He has traveled the world and gained the respect of many professionals in the field of archaeology and history. He is meticulous when a project catches his attention and will expend large amounts of energy to find answers to scholarly questions related to history and ley line magic.
He is an excellent student and according to the books, he does not expend much effort into his studies, which implies that he's quick to grasp information and that he is intelligent. The school he attends will fail students who get lower than a B in any of his classes and Gansey is never shown to struggle with any subject other than Latin. This may be because of boredom since he's stated that he never focused on it because two of his best friends know the language so well.
During his bouts of insomnia, Gansey builds a model of the town he lives in. The replica is made from cardboard and is sturdy and very detailed. This suggests some artistic talent that he hasn't fully explored because of his obsession with his search.
INVENTORY:
Other than the clothes that he was wearing (khakis, a brightly colored polo shirt, boat shoes, underwear and socks) he’ll have:
1. An epi pen
2. His journal that he’s used to document his search for Glendower
3. The keys to his Camaro
4. His glasses
5. An Aglionby Academy hoodie
6. A cheap snow globe that has glitter instead of snow
